What You Should Know About Gear Lubrication In The Food and Pharmaceutical Industry
The main purpose of gear lubrication in every case is the reduction of tooth wear, increasing the efficiency of power transmission by reducing friction and the reduction of working temperatures derived from the existence of such friction. The tooth geometry and profile generates a rolling and a slip motion, which causes gears to operate frequently in boundary friction regimes. To make things more complicated, FDA 21 CFR 178.3570 guidelines limit the type of gear lubricants that are admissible in areas where HACCP (Hazard Analysis of Critical Contact Points) determines there could be risk of accidental contact with food.
The NSF (National Sanitation Foundation) is the organism in charge of registering and approving lubricants, among other chemicals, and classifying them into the appropriate category. The most relevant categories for us would be:
H1- Which are products that are admissible in and around food processing areas where there could be accidental contact of the lubricant with the goods being manufactured.
H2- Which are products that are admissible in a food manufacturing facility where there is no risk of accidental contact with the goods being produced .
Gears are usually lubricated with oil or grease. Oil lubrication is preferred because it will provide better dissipation of heat and will not pick up dirt or other contaminants from the atmosphere that could act as abrasives on the teeth's surfaces. Grease lubrication is usually limited to cases where sealing is only possible at high building expenses. For open, slowly running gears it is common to see solvent diluted compounds when there is no sanitary restrictions. These type of formulations are impossible under NSF H1 class and we usually have to settle for oil based or grease based products that are solvent free.
Under H2 class there's the possibility of having solvent based formulations and even bonded coatings (these are varnishes with high content of solid lubricants, most commonly PTFE or graphite) that are specially suited to alleviate friction in boundary or mixed regimes.
Lubricating oils are suitable for closed gear boxes and the viscosity of such oil is usually determined by the manufacturer of these power transmission equipment. If viscosity is too low it can lead to an ineffective lubricating film forming which will show up as very noticeable wear. If oil viscosity is too high that will lead to power loss and increased working temperature which will also accelerate the decay of the transmission oil.
About CAMCO® FMO-7 Series For The Food Processing Industry
CAMCO® FMO-7 Series is a fully formulated synthetic gear and bearing lubricant based on synthetic hydrocarbons. The CAMCO® FMO-7 Series gear and bearing lubricants have excellent thermal and oxidative stability, combined with superior gear load carrying ability.
The synthetic hydrocarbon base fluid has proved in extensive field evaluation to give extended service life and overall economic benefits. Synthetic hydrocarbons combine high viscosity indexes, high film strength and excellent mechanical shear resistance even in heavily loaded applications. Additives provide superior oxidative stability corrosion protection and load carrying ability. Field test reduction in heat build-up due to friction. The reduced friction may also reduce horsepower requirements up to ten percent depending on other operating and environmental conditions. Other advantages include improved cold temperature fluidity. Good high temperature oxidation and thermal stability (operating limits are typically 100°F higher than mineral oils). Low volatility and compatibility with mineral oils.
Authorized by NSF for use in Federally inspected meat and poultry plants (H-1). Complies with FDA 21 CFR 178.3570 – Lubricants with Incidental Food Contact.

CAMCO® FMO-7-100
NSF H1 Synthetic ISO VG 100 | Gear Oil | EP Additives | Made in USA |
CAMCO® FMO-7-100 is a fully synthetic ISO VG 100 gear oil that is also suitable for multipurpose lubrications in the food industry. Long operating times due to high temperature and oxidation stability. Good wear protection. Resistant to water vapours, alkali and acid disinfectants and cleaning agents. Tasteless and odourless.
Formulation acc. to the FDA guideline 21 CFR
178.3570. Registrated by the NSF in category H1 for the
use in the food industry if an incidental contact is technically inevitable. Through
optimum additivation against oxidation and aging economically extended operating
times. Resistant to hot and cold water, steam, common disinfection and cleaning
agents. It presents strong adhering properties.
For optimum performance clean thoroughly the lubrication point first mechanically and then
with an appropriate food safe cleaner. Before initial filling of gears remove
corrosion protection agent. Fill gear so that the dipping teeth receive lubricant for
sure. Apply sufficient amount with a brush, dripping oiler, by dipping or central
lubrication systems. Instructions of the gear and machine manufacturer have to be
observed. Relubrication intervals and amount to be defined according to service
conditions. Don't mix with other lubricants.
